Furman Singers Furman Singers is recognized as one of America's premier collegiate choirs. Founded in 1946 by DuPre Rhame and conducted since 1970 by Bingham Vick, Jr., the Singers tours annually in the United States, and biennially in Europe. The summer concert tour in 2002 will be the 15th international tour. Performances by the Furman Singers are noted for exceptional tone quality, a variety of musical styles presented, and an enthusiastic esprit de corps that creates a memorable experience for the audience. In July, 1996, the Furman Singers performed with the famed Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra in the nationally televised "Pops Goes the Fourth" concert from Boston. The Singers have performed for the inauguration of two governors of South Carolina. The Furman Singers have been selected to perform for two national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, and three Southern Division (southeastern United States) conventions of ACDA. Each year, the Furman Singers is featured in on-campus performances of major oratorios. In the spring of 2001, the Singers joined with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, the Furman Symphony Orchestra, and the Greenville Chorale in an historic performance of the Berlioz Requiem. The biennial summer concert tours have taken the Furman Singers to many of the great cathedrals and churches in Europe and Russia. In England, concerts have included St. Martin-in-the-Fields and St. Margaret's at Westminster Abbey in London, York Minster, Bath Abbey, Ely Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral, and Canterbury Cathedral. In Austria, the Singers have performed in Stefansdom in Vienna, at the Salzburg Cathedral, and in Hohenems and Innsbruck Group size for the 2006 tour is about 33 people.
Bingham Vick,Jr. has conducted the Furman Singers since 1970. Only the second conductor of this well-known collegiate choir, Vick has led the Furman Singers to a position of national and international acclaim. |
